How To Use Facebook For Fundraising

Facebook makes it easy for non-profit individuals to communicate their message to the general public. What is more, this large social media site can make fundraising faster, more effective and more profitable than ever before. Following are some tips on how any NGO or even a group of regular individuals can raise funds via Facebook.

Open a Dedicated Facebook Page

The first step in raising funds via Facebook is to open a dedicated Facebook page. This page should be a business page, not a personal one.

Provide Good Content

The Facebook page should provide a clear yet short overview outlining the purpose of the organization and what the funds would be used for. Including ample photo and video footage is always a good idea, as this shows that the project and/or organization is bona fide. This content can also include links to the foundation’s web page and/or other helpful links that provide more information.

It is also important for content to be updated on a very regular basis. While most social media users do not expect a non-profit entity to update a page numerous times a day, a static page will fail to attract interest of potential donors. What is more, those who see a static page that has not been updated in some time will wonder if the project is still moving forward and/or may question the organization’s legitimacy.

Use Appropriate Apps

Facebook allows the person setting up the new page to put in apps that make it possible for individuals to take immediate action. Fundraising apps such as GoGetFunding.com and FundRazr allow people to make donations without having to leave the Facebook page.

Alternatively, apps may prompt individuals to take some other sort of suitable action. The Soi Dog Foundation, for instance, has installed a custom-made app that allows users to immediately apply to adopt a dog.

Get People to Come

Once the Facebook page is set up, encourage people to visit and like it. Those who created the page can (and should) put a link to it on their personal Facebook page. Including a link to the Facebook page on the NGO website is also a good idea. Facebook itself notes that using Instagram (and Pinterest) to spread the word is also effective. An NGO that has the money to do so may also want to consider putting up targeted PPC ads on Facebook.

Facebook makes it easier than ever to promote a cause and request donations. However, potential donors have many good causes to choose from; for this reason, a Facebook page requesting donations must have appealing, regularly updated content and apps that make giving simple and easy. It is also important to promote the Facebook page by all means possible, as getting more visitors and fans will not only increase a non-profit organization’s influence but also the amount of donations that come in.
